  • I bought several cookbooks for my daughter (almost 3) for Christmas and this is one of my least favorite. It's not a bad book. The recipes we've tried so far are not that tasty. I do really like the intro, it includes pictures of kitchen tools and instructions on cooking basics, like separating an egg. But the recipes are difficult to follow.
  • Bought this for my toddler who is about 2.5 years old thinking this would be age appropriate based on thr title. The kids shown in this books are at least 4. They are NOT toddlers nor are the recipies for toddlers- lots of handeling of raw chicken!! Will be returning.
  • Great book for what i was looking for. To give my son an idea of how to cook up meals with illustrative pictures of little ones cooking to go with his play kitchen. For most recipes only couple with poultry but obviously parents would handle the meats. Mostly sweet treats, love!

ONLY issue I have is that alot of the items to cook are NOT things my child will eat (fish cakes) and some of the ingredients I am not able to get in my rural area. If we lived in large city, this might be easier to use, As it is, it sits on the cookbook shelf collecting dust. I think book looks great and had high hopes...

  • The photos in this book are beautiful, but seem to come from a place overflowing with funds. From a loft in a converted mill with 16 ft. floor to ceiling windows overlooking a river to designer furniture, and custom made leather aprons and ceramic watering canisters, I was left feeling not inspired but a little depressed that the book is tailored to a specific audience. It sure looks nice on my Ikea coffee table, though.
  • Hilton Carter's new book on styling house plants is a beautiful object in and of itself. The photographs are inspirational, and the plants are luscious. But even more than that, Carter's "green passion" and enthusiasm is balanced by his knowledge and experience - I am already rethinking some of my own indoor green spaces to really showcase some of my plants in a way that better compliments my home and office. Excellent book!

What sets his home and plants apart from all the rest is he has arranged the plants in much the same way as an artist composes a painting or as an interior designer puts her vision into a room. Hilton is first an artist, a designer and creates beautifully curated spaces filled with plants in a non- cluttered way. His home is filled with life and warmth.

    I pre-ordered Hilton Carter's, Wild at Home book the first day it became available of . For several years I've been following Hilton's Instagram feed, it's my very favorite feed on Instagram. I don't remember anymore how I first came across his work with plants, perhaps he mentioned Terrain or Terrain mention him. What I do know is Terrain in Glen Mills is one of my favorite places, it's a garden store and cafe, filled with plants that are so well curated and styled and a delight to all your senses. Soft music plays, candles are burning, there's usually a fire pit burning outside, it's a fabulous example of 'Scandinavian hygge.' This same magical atmosphere is what Hilton has created and shared in his new book. And you can create it too in your home.

    I received my copy of Wild at Home, and started reading it that day and the next day. It's filled with so many helpful tips on plant care and even a section on making a plant hammock or a lamp terrarium! It's an easy read and a great reference book for plant care. The book is full in inspirational photographs from Hilton's home and also from some of his friends homes he has styled with plants.

    I have the feeling that this might just be the first of many books the Hilton will create. I highly recommend this book (it's a 10!) to anyone who wants to care for their green friends in the best possible way. I look forward to many other books from Hilton and maybe even a coffee table book!

  • Hilton Carter’s “Wild at Home” is so inspiring to me! As someone who’s a big thrifter and diyer i try to go for the cheapest options for my plant storage needs, by building my own shelves and macrame hangers. This book offers fun tips on how to arrange your home around plants. The plant hammock tutorial is one I will definitely be trying and though I already propagate I’m excited to have knowledge on how to do it properly with other plants such as the fiddle leaf fig and monstera. After reading this book I am already seeing my small apartment a lot differently and can’t wait to see the slow transformation of my space to plant heaven.
  • I’ve been so excited to finally get this because, I’ve loved following his page for awhile now - so I was hoping I would love this book...now that I have it, I love it even more! It’s informative, it’s conversational and real - one of my favorite call outs he used pictures of plants that weren’t perfect - pictures of regular plants - not pictures of that one perfect leaf, the one that was shined up and prepared especially for taking a photo. As I said before, this book is real and it’s a must have! Hilton, you’ve out done yourself!

  • I absolutely *loved* The Girl in the Painting, a phenomenal book, quite possibly Renita D’Silva’s best yet! Tragic but uplifting. Heartbreaking yet heartwarming. A book I could not put down, but also a story I didn’t want to end. It broke my heart, made me think about the fragility and ironies of life, all the while empathizing with characters that felt like relatives by the end.

    The Girl in the Painting is an epic tome, intricately weaved through generations, innocence unraveling bit by bit, from early 20th Century London and India to the year 2000. From the prologue you know the seemingly separate tales of Margaret and Archana will intersect, but the question is how. Watching the author slowly peel back the layers, revealing the interconnectedness of the various storylines with delicacy and precision, is one of my favorite things about her writing. Unlike a crime thriller where, as a reader, you’re trying to guess the killer’s identity from the get-go, or you’re simply reading through to get to the twist you know is coming, reading a Renita D’Silva book is a unique treat; a journey as much as a destination. I find myself not wanting to rush it. I don’t want to figure everything out. I want to behold her brilliance, uncoiling each mystery and twist at the appropriate moment, exactly where she intends for the lightbulb to go off. It’s a thing of storytelling beauty, and bearing witness to subplots harmonizing in unexpected ways is a thrill, delivered most satisfyingly after the tension and suspense have been built. When the storylines finally converge, and you find out how Margaret and Archana are connected for example, it’s jaw dropping.

    Even early on, when you’re meeting Margaret, Winnie, Archana, and Radha, among others, as children, and being introduced to the setting, I was riveted. Part of that is my experience with and excitement about Renita D’Silva’s books, and the understanding that she has something very special planned for the reader. But the other is her writing, which as always, is superb. I cannot name another author who does a better job transporting the reader directly into the story by engaging his/her tastes, smells, sounds, sights, and imagination. In particular, the scenes in India are always such a delight to read and dammit if I don’t go and make myself some cardamom tea or something when I’m reading them. I’m craving Indian food mid story because I can taste it. The language is atmospheric and I found myself right beside the characters the whole way.

    Far from just a fascinating tale of intrigue, betrayal, love and loss, The Girl in the Painting is imbued with deeper meaning and symbolism throughout. This is a story about women’s rights, and the plight of women throughout history. It’s one thing to learn about sati in a history book, and something entirely different to feel the absolute terror of it through the characters, in the way only a novel can accomplish. It’s about racism, and classism, and the horrors of war, which leave permanent damage reverberating for generations. I loved the ubiquity and symbolism of fire, and how Margaret was tormented by it her whole life, just as her comfort was always threatened by the risk of a catastrophic change which could occur at any time in a flash.

    One of my favorite things about historical fiction is the extra layer to the reader’s suspension of disbelief. A good writer can pull it off no matter the genre, but with Renita’s storytelling, her true-to-life characters, and her comingling of historical and fictional events, I 100% believed that The Girl in the Painting was a real story and that Margaret, Archana, Suraj, Emma and others actually existed. This book really illustrates the beauty of historical fiction. If crime thrillers are a California cabernet that may or may not come in a twist off cap, historical fiction is red burgundy—understated, sophisticated, perhaps not for the masses but what experienced oenophiles drink.

    Creating believable characters who are well developed and behave consistently, while still being fallibly human, is difficult enough in one discrete time period. But doing it at various and disparate stages of their lives requires mastery and a deep understanding of human behavior. Renita creates heroes with flaws, and villains with strengths, and exquisitely makes you question which they are, which is so much like real life. The course of the relationship between Margaret and Suraj was so believable, and it beautifully captured the fragility and transience of love, no matter how strong. As agonizing as it was, it was also one of my favorite parts of the book. Simple moments like Margaret awkwardly standing outside the door worrying about whether Vanessa Bell would even remember her invitation to the Bloomsbury Group were so relatable and exactly what I would have been thinking. The entire book is flush with small but masterful details in which I could feel what the characters were experiencing in a way that didn’t just put me beside them, it put me inside them. This is writing perfection.

    As a huge fan of Renita’s, it’s hard not to have lofty expectations for each new release, but she never disappoints, and in this case even exceeded expectations. The Girl in the Painting is a book that left me shook and will stay with me for a long time.
  • More amazing writing by Renita. I couldn't put it down. The plot is spun as a spider spins his web. Fascinating! Their is a little sex and one adultery scene. I think it's free of profanity (very little). I wouldn't recommend to a young teen .
  • I have read several books by this author and I always bring the box of tissues with me when I begin reading her books. I love reading history and especially like India during the British Raj. This is a read.

    I LOVED this book. It was so hard to put down. I wanted to keep reading it til the end but yet I didn't want the end to come. You spend so much time with these characters they feel like family. You know their thoughts before they think them.
    Starting out in early twentieth century London and India to 2000. So it is a bit of a time travel but most of the book is spent in the past. My heart is hurting for these characters . The ultimate betrayal changes more lives than two. Heartbreaking for sure but this book was so fascinating.
    Emma must go to India for her grandmother, Margaret who moved there from London during the early 1900's to marry the Indian man she met in London. Going to India was a huge culture change for Margaret. I could very easily picture myself in India from the descriptions, the food,homes,the overwhelming poverty and the absolute dislike of the white woman marrying the Indian man especially since his parents arranged for him to be married to another Indian woman and he goes against it to pick his own bride that is not one of their own.
    There is much celebration when she falls pregnant and her husband is so looking forward to their child. In India, Archana plays a huge role in Margaret's life and she has her own story as well that intertwines greatly with Margaret's. Such tragedy and sadness in both of their lives but yet hope,forgiveness and redemption in this book. This book reads like one of those fabulous miniseries, after all it is 498 pages so it has a lot of material to cover. So many emotions at work here. You'll run through all of them with this book so do have the tissues ready.
    This is my first read by this author and I already can't wait to dive into another by her.

"I’ve just finished reading the book and wish I could express in words how much I appreciate the content. Just in case, the Longevity Paradox is indeed one of the most important pieces I’ve ever read—specially if we narrow down the options under the health category.

Let me divide the review in 4 parts. First I’ll share personal thoughts and takeaways. Next, I hope to put together a summary from each chapter including favorite excerpts highlighted while reading the book. Then, I’ll include my opinion to whom I’d recommend reading it. Last, I’ll suggest a few complementary readings.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS

I could feel the present book was carefully written—Dr. Gundry took the time and energy to translate the complex science of longevity into an engaging and practical book.

Disregarding people with severe health conditions—in need of intensive treatment—I’d encourage us to take the time to change our habits gradually. It’s easy to underestimate the value of making small improvements on a daily basis. That said, it doesn’t matter where we’re right now. What matters is whether our habits are putting us on the path toward personal success.

Now, after reading the Longevity Paradox, I’ll certainly make a smooth transition from the Plant Paradox program toward the one laid out here. Just to clarify in case you’re familiar with the Plant Paradox program, both programs are virtually the same in terms of what to eat. The 3 main differences are that in the Longevity Paradox Dr. Gundry factors in when to eat, how much to eat on certain days of the month, and lifestyle habits to “die young at a ripe old age.”

As a final digression, although there are precious books available independently of our health beliefs, preferences, and needs, I wouldn’t look further than the Longevity Paradox because it covers the latest research from different fields in a single piece.

SUMMARY

The book is divided into 3 parts. The first one explains the importance of our gut bacteria—and why they’re “such an important piece of the Longevity Paradox.” Next, we explore how gut health impacts each system in the body, from heart and brain health all the way to weight management and skin integrity. Finally, Dr. Gundry shares a comprehensive yet practical program for a “long life span and health span.”

[Introduction] Dr. Gundry starts by sharing that he got to learn more from his beloved centenarian patient than she learned from him. After setting the tone, he explains the importance of taking care of our microbiome to thrive in life—after all, “our relationship with our bugs has always been, and continues to be, symbiotic.” Curiously, our gut bacteria aren’t only in charge of our health, but also in charge of our behavior. One of the premises is that when we feed our good microbes—Dr. Gundry calls them as ‘gut buddies’—properly, they’ll return the favor. At the end of the chapter we’re informed that “some elements of the Longevity Paradox program may be familiar, such as eating lots of certain vegetables and getting the right amounts of exercise and sleep, while others, such as tricking your body into thinking it’s winter year-round to stimulate your stem cells and spacing out your meals to wash your brain at night, are brand-new.”

[Chapter 1] As we delve into the first chapter, Dr. Gundry clarifies that we share our health symptoms with those we share similar habits and live in similar environments, not so much because we share the same DNA. According to recent research studies, it’s our holobiomes—the sum of the microbes in our body, skin, and even in a cloud around us—and their genes that make us age so quickly, not our human genes. He then states that “you aren’t what you eat; you’re what your gut buddies digest.” In addition to digesting the food we eat, our gut buddies also manufacture and deliver vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, hormones, and proteins to where they’re needed in our body. That’s not all, they’re also involved with regulating our immune, nervous, and hormonal systems. He intelligently describes how our microbiome and mitochondria evolved over time in a synergetic role. Before we move on to the next chapter, we become aware of how modern days may be hurting our gut buddies. Simply put, we must avoid decimating our gut buddies while feeding the ‘bad bugs’.

[Chapter 2] Here we take a close look at the gut wall, on how the quality of our single-layer mucosal cells is tightly linked to our overall health. When “your mucosal cells are lined up tightly side by side, your gut lining functions as a good fence that keeps everything except single molecules of digested amino acids, fatty acids, and sugar on the other side. But if your fence gets worn down and becomes rife with microscopic holes, it’ll allow other compounds to leak through, and your health will begin to suffer.” Dr. Gundry further explains that when the wrong molecules or even bacteria cross the border, the immune system ramp up, inciting a constant inflammatory attack. The presence of the lectin called wheat germ agglutinin, WGA, can be more detrimental than gluten because WGA is tiny and “even if the gut mucosal barrier hasn’t been compromised, WGA can pass through the walls of the intestine and cause inflammation.” Moreover, WGA has the ability to mimic insulin, creating problems in the body. Besides avoiding WGA present in wheat, hormesis can be a positive strategy to maintain our gut wall integrity. Hormesis “is the favorable response of an organism to low doses of stress that would be harmful in larger doses.” Through examples, he shows that in the Longevity Paradox program we’ll take advantage of hormesis because it plays an important role in activating longevity. Still in Chapter 2, the role of autophagy, stem cells, and seasonal eating patterns are comprehensively explained to show how they promote long term benefits.

[Chapter 3] This chapter is one of my favorites. Dr. Gundry walks us through “the 7 deadly myths of aging” by debunking popular theories of longevity that may be actually causing us to age more quickly. One by one, each myth is properly addressed in the book: [1] The mediterranean diet promotes longevity; [2] Animal protein is essential for strength and longevity; [3] Growth hormones promote youthfulness and vitality; [4] High metabolic rate is a sign of good health; [5] It’s important to get plenty of iron as you age; [6] Saturated fat shouldn’t be demonized; [7] Milk does a body good.

[Chapter 4] Whereas earlier we focused on the role of our microbiome, now it’s time to examine how treating our gut buddies well will positively impact the quality of our lives. Through research studies and his own experience as a heart surgeon, Dr. Gundry shows that “the data evidence not only the link between heart disease and autoimmunity but also the fact that all disease—even heart disease—really does begin in the gut.” Based on latest findings, we learn that there isn’t a direct connection between cholesterol intake and heart disease. The problem lies in high triglycerides instead. Last, we learn the connection between cancer and sugar: “what I do know is that when you limit sugar and animal protein consumption and trick your body into thinking it’s period of regression, you reduce your risks of both cancer and autoimmune disease.”

[Chapter 5] Now we shift gears toward arthritis, osteopenia, and osteoporosis—“the most recent research confirms that arthritis is caused not by overuse but rather by bad bugs in the gut creating inflammation.” More important, though, is to know that our gut buddies can reinforce the gut barrier, prevent bad intrusion, and enable us to heal. Dr. Gundry affirms that the group of cells that make cartilage and bones “are still there in your bone on bone joints and can grow a new articular surface.”

[Chapter 6] “From those seemingly innocuous senior moments to more serious neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, all cognitive decline stems from the same root cause: neuroinflammation.” And let’s guess where does inflammation start? You guess it right, in the gut. According to the evidences, the gut and the brain are directed connected. That said, “gut microbe-driven neuroinflammation results in the collateral damage of neurons that your brain immune system is sworn to protect and causes the cognitive decline that we think of as a normal part of aging.” One of the highlights in this chapter is to understand that “leaving as big a gap as possible between your last meal of the day and your bedtime” plays a crucial role in preventing neurodegenerative diseases. The last section is a primer on the food sources we should consume on a daily basis to dramatically reduce our likelihood of developing neurodegenerative diseases.

[Chapter 7] Following Dr. Gundry’s maxim, “you aren’t what you eat; you’re what your gut buddies digest”, this chapter focuses on keeping our microbiome fueled with the foods they love to prevent weight gain and skin damage. We’re encouraged to avoid endocrine disruptors to keep unnecessary weight gain away as we age. Among them, he discusses BPA, phthalates, sunscreen, arsenic, and azodicarbonamide. In terms of skin, “your gut is, in essence, your skin turned outside in.” As explained earlier in Chapter 1, there are trillions of bacteria living on our skin, and together with the microbiome, they make up our holobiome. To maximize the skin’s protection, it’s important to cultivate a diverse skin bacterial population. It’s fascinating to learn that “when it comes to sun exposure, your skin buddies can actually protect you against skin cancer despite your levels of exposure to the sun.” Not only that, but if our skin buddies leave for whatever reason, “you’ll see it right there in the mirror—in the form of thinning skin, age spots, wrinkles, acne, and eczema.” Dr. Gundry suggests 3 of the most beneficial ingredients, not for the skin itself but for all-important skin buddies: bonicel, polyphenols, and wild yam extract.

[Chapter 8] From now on, we delve into the Longevity Paradox program itself, putting all the pieces together. One of the reasons why I genuinely appreciate this book is that Dr. Gundry walks us through the details, leaving virtually no margin for error. In Chapter 8 “we’ll cover exactly which foods your gut buddies love the most and which ones feed the bad guys.” One thing to take into account is that in a matter of weeks, if not days, we can dramatically shift the bacterial population in our gut by feeding our gut buddies properly. He goes through the details of each source, explaining the whys behind each decision. Among gut buddies’ friendly foods, let me share some favorites: leeks, cruciferous veggies, mushrooms, avocado, green bananas, berries, perilla seed oil, olive oil, coconut milk and yogurt, coffee fruit, and green tea. On the other hand, there’re “the main sources of nutrition for the bad bugs in your gut and should be avoided as much as possible.” Among them, simple sugars and starches, artificial sugar substitutes, conventional dairy products, corn oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil are all detrimental.

[Chapter 9] This chapter is all about implementing the Longevity Paradox program through a coherent meal plan. Each month is broken down into 5 key components. Each one of the following components is explained in greater detail in the book: [1] We’re encouraged to eliminate animal protein and limit calories to 900 a day for 5 consecutive days a month to mimic the benefits of a whole month of full-time calorie restriction; [2] On most days we can eat as much as we like of the gut buddies’ favorite foods; [3] Once or twice a week we’ll skip dinner or eat it very early to make sure our brain is clean while we sleep; [4] Optionally, we can consume only 600 calories a day once or twice a week to get extra longevity benefits; [5] An intensive care cleanse program, which will give our mitochondrial function an extra boost, is an excellent strategy if we’re suffering from degenerative problems or want to kick-start the process.

[Chapter 10] Together with Chapter 3, this is another favorite. Here Dr. Gundry divides the lifestyle program into 2 parts: “first, the habits that will stress and strengthen your cells, and second, the habits that will allow them to recover.”

[Chapter 11] Among the supplement recommendations, Dr. Gundry’s favorites are: vitamin D3, the B vitamins, polyphenols, green plant phytochemicals, prebiotics, long-chain omega-3s, and mitochondrial boosters. In his own words, “I used to tell my patients that supplements made expensive urine. That was before I started measuring the effects of vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and other phytonutrients on my patients’ inflammation biomarkers.”

[Chapter 12] The final chapter offers 30+ recipes following the food lists and meal plans presented in earlier chapters. Although I’ve had the opportunity to try only 2 of them so far, I noticed the recipes seem to be even nicer than those in the Plant Paradox Cookbook. I enjoy preparing them at least once—following the details—to cultivate a sense of creativity when coming up with new dishes. Yesterday I cooked the 'Sweet Potato Gnocchi With Creamy Mushroom Sauce'. Well, although it took some extra time to prepare the dish, I can’t lie that the outcome was beyond my expectations. And just before start writing this review, I blended the 'Green Smoothie', which is basically composed by spinach, fresh mint sprigs, lemon juice, and avocado.

RECOMMENDATION

[1] If you haven’t had the opportunity to read any of the 3 previous books from the series, I’d sincerely recommend the Longevity Paradox first. In fact, Dr. Gundry states right in the introduction that it isn’t necessary to read and understand the content of his previous books. That said, my second favorite read from the series is the Plant Paradox Quick and Easy because it focuses on practicality—he walks us through the details, step by step, encouraging us to incorporate the “30-day challenge.”

[2] I wish I could recommend the Longevity Paradox to all of us. As an example, it wouldn't be fair if I highly recommend the book to a close friend who has been on the Plant Paradox program for 6+ months and has also read a handful books on gut health and longevity. Having said that, both the content and the program are beautifully explained that can even take my friend by surprise.

COMPLEMENTARY READINGS

Besides this master piece, which is by now my favorite single book, there are others that have influenced my healthy habits for better. Among them, let me share 3 outstanding titles we can implement their recommendations in tandem with the Longevity Paradox.

[Grow A New Body, by Dr. Alberto Villoldo] This is an excellent book read just before the Longevity Paradox. It's indeed another favorite book.   • I’ve just finished reading the book and wish I could express in words how much I appreciate the content. Just in case, the Longevity Paradox is indeed one of the most important pieces I’ve ever read—specially if we narrow down the options under the health category.

    Let me divide the review in 4 parts. First I’ll share personal thoughts and takeaways. Next, I hope to put together a summary from each chapter including favorite excerpts highlighted while reading the book. Then, I’ll include my opinion to whom I’d recommend reading it. Last, I’ll suggest a few complementary readings.

    PERSONAL THOUGHTS

    I could feel the present book was carefully written—Dr. Gundry took the time and energy to translate the complex science of longevity into an engaging and practical book.

    Disregarding people with severe health conditions—in need of intensive treatment—I’d encourage us to take the time to change our habits gradually. It’s easy to underestimate the value of making small improvements on a daily basis. That said, it doesn’t matter where we’re right now. What matters is whether our habits are putting us on the path toward personal success.

    Now, after reading the Longevity Paradox, I’ll certainly make a smooth transition from the Plant Paradox program toward the one laid out here. Just to clarify in case you’re familiar with the Plant Paradox program, both programs are virtually the same in terms of what to eat. The 3 main differences are that in the Longevity Paradox Dr. Gundry factors in when to eat, how much to eat on certain days of the month, and lifestyle habits to “die young at a ripe old age.”

    As a final digression, although there are precious books available independently of our health beliefs, preferences, and needs, I wouldn’t look further than the Longevity Paradox because it covers the latest research from different fields in a single piece.

    SUMMARY

    The book is divided into 3 parts. The first one explains the importance of our gut bacteria—and why they’re “such an important piece of the Longevity Paradox.” Next, we explore how gut health impacts each system in the body, from heart and brain health all the way to weight management and skin integrity. Finally, Dr. Gundry shares a comprehensive yet practical program for a “long life span and health span.”

    [Introduction] Dr. Gundry starts by sharing that he got to learn more from his beloved centenarian patient than she learned from him. After setting the tone, he explains the importance of taking care of our microbiome to thrive in life—after all, “our relationship with our bugs has always been, and continues to be, symbiotic.” Curiously, our gut bacteria aren’t only in charge of our health, but also in charge of our behavior. One of the premises is that when we feed our good microbes—Dr. Gundry calls them as ‘gut buddies’—properly, they’ll return the favor. At the end of the chapter we’re informed that “some elements of the Longevity Paradox program may be familiar, such as eating lots of certain vegetables and getting the right amounts of exercise and sleep, while others, such as tricking your body into thinking it’s winter year-round to stimulate your stem cells and spacing out your meals to wash your brain at night, are brand-new.”

    [Chapter 1] As we delve into the first chapter, Dr. Gundry clarifies that we share our health symptoms with those we share similar habits and live in similar environments, not so much because we share the same DNA. According to recent research studies, it’s our holobiomes—the sum of the microbes in our body, skin, and even in a cloud around us—and their genes that make us age so quickly, not our human genes. He then states that “you aren’t what you eat; you’re what your gut buddies digest.” In addition to digesting the food we eat, our gut buddies also manufacture and deliver vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, hormones, and proteins to where they’re needed in our body. That’s not all, they’re also involved with regulating our immune, nervous, and hormonal systems. He intelligently describes how our microbiome and mitochondria evolved over time in a synergetic role. Before we move on to the next chapter, we become aware of how modern days may be hurting our gut buddies. Simply put, we must avoid decimating our gut buddies while feeding the ‘bad bugs’.

    [Chapter 2] Here we take a close look at the gut wall, on how the quality of our single-layer mucosal cells is tightly linked to our overall health. When “your mucosal cells are lined up tightly side by side, your gut lining functions as a good fence that keeps everything except single molecules of digested amino acids, fatty acids, and sugar on the other side. But if your fence gets worn down and becomes rife with microscopic holes, it’ll allow other compounds to leak through, and your health will begin to suffer.” Dr. Gundry further explains that when the wrong molecules or even bacteria cross the border, the immune system ramp up, inciting a constant inflammatory attack. The presence of the lectin called wheat germ agglutinin, WGA, can be more detrimental than gluten because WGA is tiny and “even if the gut mucosal barrier hasn’t been compromised, WGA can pass through the walls of the intestine and cause inflammation.” Moreover, WGA has the ability to mimic insulin, creating problems in the body. Besides avoiding WGA present in wheat, hormesis can be a positive strategy to maintain our gut wall integrity. Hormesis “is the favorable response of an organism to low doses of stress that would be harmful in larger doses.” Through examples, he shows that in the Longevity Paradox program we’ll take advantage of hormesis because it plays an important role in activating longevity. Still in Chapter 2, the role of autophagy, stem cells, and seasonal eating patterns are comprehensively explained to show how they promote long term benefits.

    [Chapter 3] This chapter is one of my favorites. Dr. Gundry walks us through “the 7 deadly myths of aging” by debunking popular theories of longevity that may be actually causing us to age more quickly. One by one, each myth is properly addressed in the book [1] The mediterranean diet promotes longevity; [2] Animal protein is essential for strength and longevity; [3] Growth hormones promote youthfulness and vitality; [4] High metabolic rate is a sign of good health; [5] It’s important to get plenty of iron as you age; [6] Saturated fat shouldn’t be demonized; [7] Milk does a body good.

    [Chapter 4] Whereas earlier we focused on the role of our microbiome, now it’s time to examine how treating our gut buddies well will positively impact the quality of our lives. Through research studies and his own experience as a heart surgeon, Dr. Gundry shows that “the data evidence not only the link between heart disease and autoimmunity but also the fact that all disease—even heart disease—really does begin in the gut.” Based on latest findings, we learn that there isn’t a direct connection between cholesterol intake and heart disease. The problem lies in high triglycerides instead. Last, we learn the connection between cancer and sugar “what I do know is that when you limit sugar and animal protein consumption and trick your body into thinking it’s period of regression, you reduce your risks of both cancer and autoimmune disease.”

    [Chapter 5] Now we shift gears toward arthritis, osteopenia, and osteoporosis—“the most recent research confirms that arthritis is caused not by overuse but rather by bad bugs in the gut creating inflammation.” More important, though, is to know that our gut buddies can reinforce the gut barrier, prevent bad intrusion, and enable us to heal. Dr. Gundry affirms that the group of cells that make cartilage and bones “are still there in your bone on bone joints and can grow a new articular surface.”

    [Chapter 6] “From those seemingly innocuous senior moments to more serious neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, all cognitive decline stems from the same root cause neuroinflammation.” And let’s guess where does inflammation start? You guess it right, in the gut. According to the evidences, the gut and the brain are directed connected. That said, “gut microbe-driven neuroinflammation results in the collateral damage of neurons that your brain immune system is sworn to protect and causes the cognitive decline that we think of as a normal part of aging.” One of the highlights in this chapter is to understand that “leaving as big a gap as possible between your last meal of the day and your bedtime” plays a crucial role in preventing neurodegenerative diseases. The last section is a primer on the food sources we should consume on a daily basis to dramatically reduce our likelihood of developing neurodegenerative diseases.

    [Chapter 7] Following Dr. Gundry’s maxim, “you aren’t what you eat; you’re what your gut buddies digest”, this chapter focuses on keeping our microbiome fueled with the foods they love to prevent weight gain and skin damage. We’re encouraged to avoid endocrine disruptors to keep unnecessary weight gain away as we age. Among them, he discusses BPA, phthalates, sunscreen, arsenic, and azodicarbonamide. In terms of skin, “your gut is, in essence, your skin turned outside in.” As explained earlier in Chapter 1, there are trillions of bacteria living on our skin, and together with the microbiome, they make up our holobiome. To maximize the skin’s protection, it’s important to cultivate a diverse skin bacterial population. It’s fascinating to learn that “when it comes to sun exposure, your skin buddies can actually protect you against skin cancer despite your levels of exposure to the sun.” Not only that, but if our skin buddies leave for whatever reason, “you’ll see it right there in the mirror—in the form of thinning skin, age spots, wrinkles, acne, and eczema.” Dr. Gundry suggests 3 of the most beneficial ingredients, not for the skin itself but for all-important skin buddies bonicel, polyphenols, and wild yam extract.

    [Chapter 8] From now on, we delve into the Longevity Paradox program itself, putting all the pieces together. One of the reasons why I genuinely appreciate this book is that Dr. Gundry walks us through the details, leaving virtually no margin for error. In Chapter 8 “we’ll cover exactly which foods your gut buddies love the most and which ones feed the bad guys.” One thing to take into account is that in a matter of weeks, if not days, we can dramatically shift the bacterial population in our gut by feeding our gut buddies properly. He goes through the details of each source, explaining the whys behind each decision. Among gut buddies’ friendly foods, let me share some favorites leeks, cruciferous veggies, mushrooms, avocado, green bananas, berries, perilla seed oil, olive oil, coconut milk and yogurt, coffee fruit, and green tea. On the other hand, there’re “the main sources of nutrition for the bad bugs in your gut and should be avoided as much as possible.” Among them, simple sugars and starches, artificial sugar substitutes, conventional dairy products, corn oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil are all detrimental.

    [Chapter 9] This chapter is all about implementing the Longevity Paradox program through a coherent meal plan. Each month is broken down into 5 key components. Each one of the following components is explained in greater detail in the book [1] We’re encouraged to eliminate animal protein and limit calories to 900 a day for 5 consecutive days a month to mimic the benefits of a whole month of full-time calorie restriction; [2] On most days we can eat as much as we like of the gut buddies’ favorite foods; [3] Once or twice a week we’ll skip dinner or eat it very early to make sure our brain is clean while we sleep; [4] Optionally, we can consume only 600 calories a day once or twice a week to get extra longevity benefits; [5] An intensive care cleanse program, which will give our mitochondrial function an extra boost, is an excellent strategy if we’re suffering from degenerative problems or want to kick-start the process.

    [Chapter 10] Together with Chapter 3, this is another favorite. Here Dr. Gundry divides the lifestyle program into 2 parts “first, the habits that will stress and strengthen your cells, and second, the habits that will allow them to recover.”

    [Chapter 11] Among the supplement recommendations, Dr. Gundry’s favorites are vitamin D3, the B vitamins, polyphenols, green plant phytochemicals, prebiotics, long-chain omega-3s, and mitochondrial boosters. In his own words, “I used to tell my patients that supplements made expensive urine. That was before I started measuring the effects of vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and other phytonutrients on my patients’ inflammation biomarkers.”

    [Chapter 12] The final chapter offers 30+ recipes following the food lists and meal plans presented in earlier chapters. Although I’ve had the opportunity to try only 2 of them so far, I noticed the recipes seem to be even nicer than those in the Plant Paradox Cookbook. I enjoy preparing them at least once—following the details—to cultivate a sense of creativity when coming up with new dishes. Yesterday I cooked the 'Sweet Potato Gnocchi With Creamy Mushroom Sauce'. Well, although it took some extra time to prepare the dish, I can’t lie that the outcome was beyond my expectations. And just before start writing this review, I blended the 'Green Smoothie', which is basically composed by spinach, fresh mint sprigs, lemon juice, and avocado.

    RECOMMENDATION

    [1] If you haven’t had the opportunity to read any of the 3 previous books from the series, I’d sincerely recommend the Longevity Paradox first. In fact, Dr. Gundry states right in the introduction that it isn’t necessary to read and understand the content of his previous books. That said, my second favorite read from the series is the Plant Paradox Quick and Easy because it focuses on practicality—he walks us through the details, step by step, encouraging us to incorporate the “30-day challenge.”

    [2] I wish I could recommend the Longevity Paradox to all of us. As an example, it wouldn't be fair if I highly recommend the book to a close friend who has been on the Plant Paradox program for 6+ months and has also read a handful books on gut health and longevity. Having said that, both the content and the program are beautifully explained that can even take my friend by surprise.

    COMPLEMENTARY READINGS

    Besides this master piece, which is by now my favorite single book, there are others that have influenced my healthy habits for better. Among them, let me share 3 outstanding titles we can implement their recommendations in tandem with the Longevity Paradox.

    [Grow A New Body, by Dr. Alberto Villoldo] This is an excellent book read just before the Longevity Paradox. It's indeed another favorite book. Even though the nutrition plan is quite similar to Dr. Gundry’s approach, Dr. Villoldo also suggests spiritual practices through vision quests in nature, “which accelerates the body’s self-repair and regeneration systems and reconnects you to your own deepest purpose.”

  • I was so disappointed after reading this book--it's nothing but the same information from his previous book-- Plant Paradox with the exception of a few new 'studies' added. While I do appreciate his research, I do believe that the eating guidelines he emphasizes are sooooo restrictive--no meats, no dairy, no grains, very few fruits-- and by the way don't bother training for a marathon-- that you may live a long life but you may die stressing over all the things you can't eat and shouldn't do--so what's the purpose of living! I have given up a number of foods (nightshades, grains some fruits, some dairy), but his approach is if you don't follow 'all-the-guidelines' just invest in his supplements. At least with Dr Lipman and Dr Hyman's programs, I can still enjoy the art of eating and running without the fear!!!
  • I read Gundry's book Plant Paradox this past February, just prior to my office visit with my functional and integrative medicine doctor. I asked her if she was familiar with the Plant Paradox book. Her reply was that she read it and considered it worthwhile for improving overall health. Gundry's second book Longevity Paradox follows in the path of his first book, this time focusing on gut health and how to achieve a healthier gut in pursuit of a longer and healthier life. I'm still reading the book, but can say that it offers much scientific information and useful advice to achieve on this subject. Both books are worth having in your personal health and medical library.
  • What a wonderful encore to Dr. Gundry’s The Plant Paradox! That book and the wisdom he expressed in it turned my life around. I have largely calmed my IBS, lost 40 pounds although I was not technically even “overweight”, and feel so much better now. [See my review under “Tom G” of The Plant Paradox.] Now I am on to 816 fasting and doing even better!

    Over the past two years I have avidly followed a wide range of Functional or Integrative Medicine (FM) leaders – amongst them Hyman, Wahls, Bredesen, Perlmutter, Cummins/Gerber, Fung, Wolfson, Brownstein, Cowan, Pizzorno, Tennant, Naiman, Seyfried, Christofferson, Patrick, Mercola, Amen, Lane, Myhill, Kalish, Asprey, Marchegiani, and many more. I have read their books and watched many if not most of their YouTube videos. Incidentally, all these authors’ books ought to be required reading in any medical school curriculum.

    Each of these FM gurus are superb. Because some of them come at FM from a particular background, no one has done a better job of painting the converging field of functional medicine than Dr. Gundry does in The Longevity Paradox. Gundry has captured the essence of quality nutrition and (self) health care in this informative easy-to-read book. It helps if you have read The Plant Paradox, but it is not necessary to have done so as most of the information in The Plant Paradox is summarized in The Longevity Paradox.

    There is much new in Gundry’s latest book, from the lessons he continues to learn in caring for his patients and in routinely testing their blood and other biomarkers every three months, to what he has gleaned from the latest scientific papers published throughout the world. He also includes a chapter on supplements and for inspiration throws in a listing of the 79 he currently takes. Yikes, I only take 22!

    Buy this book. Read and digest this book. Follow Dr. Gundry’s advice. You will not regret it! Neither will your microbiome.
  • I have been following Dr Gundry’s Plant Paradox protocol for the past 2 years while researching health hacks to optimize my situation (Parkinson’s). Everything in this book agrees with or supports I’m experiencing and learning. I cannot be cured, but I believe my symptoms are minimized by following Dr Gundry’s suggestions. And I’m positive that many disease factors we describe as normal for the aged could be postponed or avoided. This work has helped me live a better life.

  • You know, sometimes the exact right thing comes into your life at exactly the right time and this book is just one of those things.
    I can't imagine anyone's life *not* being improved by taking just some of the steps suggested in this book.
    The author's openness about his own life and his own struggles is very comforting and encouraging...he's been there and he's not afraid to admit his life isn't impossibly perfect, so he doesn't come across as preachy or self-righteous. He's with you, he is you and he genuinely wants to help.
    It's also impressive that this book isn't so clinical that it's just plain boring. He shares enough of himself to make for compelling reading, which is rare in a book of this kind...reading it doesn't feel like a chore.
    What I love is that this book does something few other self-help books do it gives you concrete, doable steps YOU can take every day, on your own. All roads in this book do NOT lead straight to therapy and medication. The whole goal is to explore other options FIRST.
    Sometimes you read a book and you think "yeah, that's totally me, but now what do I do about it?" Joe Baldizzone fills in those blanks with actions that may seem deceptively simple at first glance, but prove to be very powerful in practice.
    I've actually had extraordinarily bad experiences with therapists over the years and I'm really not too keen on trying therapy again, so this book is amazing for me. I can go at my own pace and not drag myself through the often useless, sometimes painful and occasionally damaging process of in-person therapy.
    This book is so useful, I've already picked up 4 copies for friends and family. (While writing this review, I just thought of a couple more people I'd like to share it with, so I'll probably order a few more copies!)
    I can't recommend it enough. Thank you so much for writing this book, Joe!
  • I love this book. This author is very positive and down to earth. He has struggled with depression, knows how it feels, and has used all of these methods himself. I have tried prescription drugs many times through the years to deal with depression and anxiety, and I have never been able to tolerate the side effects long enough to get any benefit from the drugs. Even if the methods in this book don't work for you, they won't do you any harm or cause negative side effects. These are all practical things that you can do on your own in real life, like exercise, meditate, journal, etc., that don't cost a fortune or take up so much of your time that they become a full time job. (Some of the activities, like exercise or improving your diet, would be good things to do with a spouse or good friend.) Many of the methods he suggests, like changing your diet or exercise habits, will improve other parts of your life as well. If you are battling low-grade depression and are still able to function, I would recommend this book---there is nothing here that will harm you and you have nothing to lose.
  • I strongly recommend this book. A quote from page 136 "When you delay doing things that you know you should, want or need to, those things remain in your subconscious and have a lingering, gnawing effect. They steal little bits of your joy by prancing around in the background of everything else you think and do. They sap your energy quietly. You know they're there, you just pretend they aren't and find methods of covering them up. You might do other chores to feel that you're at least doing something productive, or you might even add to the gnawing by doing destructive or time wasting things...." You probably know all of that already but it's good to be reminded... and to be offered consolidated steps to get on the right track; this book does just that. So heed that quote and get the book then start digging in! Books have been saying such things for years but this book, as the title says, gives you 50 things and how to actually do them. Like any other book of this nature, you can't just read it and be done. However, after a quick read through (it reads fast) you can go back and easily pick out the tools you want to start working with. Of course, you will have to spend some time going through the things and writing them down separately and detailing your strategy/schedule for easy reference but you owe it to yourself to spend some time to do that and, again, any book would require that but this book lays things out as simply. I have haphazardly and coincidentally done some of the things in his book over my life and they have certainly helped me to achieve things that I certainly wouldn't have achieved without; I'm going to assume that adding his suggestions and applying them in a thought-out/consistent manner will take me to the next level- it certainly has done so for him. There IS hope. There is PROMISE. Follow the book. Baby steps.

    As to the author and his credibility and the efficacy of his methods/suggestions It is remarkable to see who Joe has become compared to the picture of who he was and the mental challenges that all but kept him shut-in the house or intoxicated during his early 20's so the things he has done, and has put down on paper for us, clearly worked.
  • I have been a licensed family therapist for over 40 years. This book is filled with practical and very useful suggestions and advice the author has clearly used successfully in his own life struggle. I have begun to recommend it to some of my patients. Not only has he used these ideas personally, he has cataloged them here for your consideration and use.
